HCLTech has signed an MoU with Transport for NSW to bring Australia’s SCATS AI traffic analytics to Indian cities.

The two organisations signed the agreement on 3 September 2026. It marks an early step toward using artificial intelligence to manage road traffic in India, an area most Indian cities still handle with basic sensors and manual monitoring.

SCATS, short for Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System, sits at the centre of the deal. The NSW government built it back in 1975.

It now runs in over 200 cities across more than 30 countries, helping traffic authorities track congestion and adjust signals using live data.

Right now, SCATS works mainly in English. Operators type in questions and get answers about traffic flow, comparing different time periods with ease.

HCLTech wants to change that for India by plugging in Sarvam’s multilingual AI models. That would let engineers and city planners query the system in regional Indian languages instead of English alone. There’s a data protection angle too.

Indian cities have grown wary of storing sensitive infrastructure data outside the country. So the partnership is looking at ways to run SCATS on private, on-site cloud setups. Traffic data would stay within local servers rather than travelling abroad.

NSW Premier Chris Minns called SCATS a proud piece of homegrown engineering and said the collaboration could make its capabilities more accessible to people managing India’s growing cities.

Swapan Johri, President of Growth Markets at HCLTech, described the deal as combining Australian traffic technology with Indian engineering talent.

HCLTech reported consolidated revenue of $14.8 billion for the 12 months ending June 2026. The company employs more than 223,000 people across 60 countries.
