New Delhi is set to host the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit on September 12 and 13, bringing several of the world’s most influential leaders and senior international officials to India.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the key leaders attending the summit, while India is hosting the event as the BRICS chair for 2026.
Putin has already arrived in India, while Xi is scheduled to reach New Delhi on September 12. Other prominent leaders attending include Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.
The UAE will be represented by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Brazil and Saudi Arabia will send their foreign ministers, while several BRICS partner countries, including Malaysia, Nigeria, Vietnam, Kazakhstan and Thailand, will also participate.
The summit will also bring together senior officials from major international institutions, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The summit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical and economic uncertainty, with wars, trade tensions and shifting global alliances creating challenges for emerging economies. BRICS now has 11 full members and a wider group of partner countries, giving the bloc a significant role in discussions around global trade, finance and economic cooperation.
For India, the summit provides an opportunity to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties with major emerging economies. New Delhi is expected to push for resilient supply chains, greater trade in services, stronger participation of MSMEs and improved access to trade finance. BRICS finance chiefs have also backed reforms in institutions such as the IMF and World Bank, along with stronger cross-border payment systems.
The gathering is also important for India-Russia relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Putin are expected to discuss trade, energy, defence and other areas of bilateral cooperation during the summit.
The 2026 BRICS summit is therefore expected to go beyond diplomatic meetings, with economic cooperation, global trade, financial reforms and supply-chain resilience likely to remain key areas of discussion.
