Anthropic is reportedly considering a new AI model to counter OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, ahead of its planned initial public offering.

In a 3,800 word essay published on September 12, Amodei wrote that the pace at which AI capabilities are improving needs to slow down, citing safety concerns. The essay drew support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

According to sources, Anthropic is currently evaluating the safety aspects of its next model as part of its internal discussions on whether to move ahead with a release. The backdrop to this decision is OpenAI’s recent launch of GPT-6 Astra on September 3.

The model has reportedly gained strong traction among enterprise users, prompting some investors to reassess Anthropic’s position as a leading provider of AI tools for businesses.

According to data from expense platform Ramp, Astra now accounts for about 13% of tracked enterprise AI spending, compared to around 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable.

Separately, developer platform OpenRouter reported that spending on OpenAI models overtook spending on Anthropic models last week, a first in over two and a half years.

That said, some investors do not see Astra as an immediate major threat, pointing to Anthropic’s existing lead in the enterprise market and the time it typically takes for large companies to switch vendors.

Anthropic’s annualised revenue run rate reportedly crossed 65 billion dollars by the end of July, up sharply from about 9 billion dollars at the end of 2025, with projections of 190 to 200 billion dollars in revenue by 2028.

OpenAI’s annualised revenue run rate, by comparison, crossed 40 billion dollars in July. Anthropic’s IPO, which had already been delayed from earlier plans, could now be pushed further, potentially to after the November US midterm elections.
