Assam Cabinet cleared a ₹11,000 cr JK Lakshmi Cement investment for a clinker plant and four grinding units, creating 2,000 jobs.
The project itself has two parts. One is a clinker manufacturing unit, which produces the raw intermediate material used to make cement.
The other is a set of four grinding units, where that clinker gets processed into the finished cement product people actually buy and use.
Once operational, the plant is expected to generate around 2,000 direct jobs within the state. This isn’t a sudden decision either.
JK Lakshmi Cement had earlier signalled its plans for a large greenfield cement project in Assam, and the Cabinet’s nod formalises that Rs 11,000 crore commitment.
The company has said the investment will roll out in phases and will also cover some value added cement products, beyond just the basic manufacturing setup.
Beyond the cement project, the same Cabinet meeting cleared several other measures for the state.
This included a nearly Rs 797 crore wetland restoration programme, of which about Rs 637.5 crore will come as an Asian Development Bank loan and the rest from the state government, aimed at reviving over 100 neglected water bodies known locally as beels.
The Cabinet also approved a new Spices Board testing laboratory in Guwahati, along with festive season support measures, including a higher welfare payout for Orunodoi beneficiaries and a bonus for tea garden workers ahead of Durga Puja.
For Assam, the cement project stands out as one of the larger industrial investments approved this year, adding to the state’s ongoing push to expand manufacturing capacity and create jobs in the region, particularly across the northeast’s construction and infrastructure sectors, which are expected to benefit from higher local cement production.
