Cabinet approved Rs 1.86 lakh cr scheme to transmit 135 GW renewable energy and add 50 GWh battery storage by 2032-33.
The scheme is called Green Energy Corridor Phase-III, or GEC-III. Its total outlay is Rs 1,86,405 crore.
A gigawatt, or GW, is a measure of power, while a gigawatt-hour, or GWh, measures how much energy a battery can hold.
Most of the money goes to power lines inside states. Rs 1,36,378 crore will strengthen these networks. The other Rs 50,000 crore will pay for batteries that store 50 GWh of electricity.
The Centre will chip in Rs 54,082 crore. This support will offset state transmission charges and limit the effect on consumer tariffs.
India is adding solar and wind plants fast, and the lines that carry their power must keep pace.
A government presentation warned that, without enough lines, renewable power could go to waste.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the aim is to have the grid ready ahead of new projects. Batteries cover another gap.
They can hold solar power made in the day and release it after sunset. They can sit at renewable plants or other key points on the grid. New state transmission projects will go through competitive bidding.
Transmission service providers will build, own, run and maintain them, and state transmission utilities will act as the implementing agencies.
Upgrades to existing networks will be done on a cost-plus basis. The push follows fast growth.
Installed solar capacity has climbed from about 3 GW in 2014 to over 168 GW by August 2026.
Wind stands at around 58 GW, and India added a record 6.05 GW of wind in 2025-26. Other recent steps point the same way.
The Cabinet has also approved Rs 7,453 crore for 1 GW of offshore wind. On 31 July, it cleared Rs 5,070 crore for floating solar projects with storage.
The target is 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. GEC-III also feeds into the longer goal of 900 GW by 2035.
