France is dealing with growing student protests and increasing pressure on its public finances, creating a major challenge for President Emmanuel Macron’s government.
Demonstrations have spread across the country as students demand better school facilities, more teachers and action on overcrowded classrooms. At the same time, rising government borrowing costs are adding to concerns about the country’s economic stability.
Student Anger Grows Over School Conditions
The protests, which began in late September, have been driven by teacher shortages, poor school buildings and long school days. Students and teachers say these problems are affecting the quality of education, with some schools struggling to provide enough staff and basic classroom equipment.
Demonstrations continued on Thursday, October 8, with thousands taking to the streets. Some schools were blocked, and clashes with police were reported in Paris. Student unions have said they will continue their campaign despite the government’s latest response.
Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced plans to deploy more than 3,000 qualified teachers who are currently without assignments. The government has also indicated that it will hire additional school staff. However, protesters want broader improvements and remain concerned that the measures may not address the underlying problems.
Rising Debt Limits Government Options
The unrest comes as France faces mounting pressure over its national debt and budget deficit. The government is expected to reduce spending and reassure investors, making it harder to meet demands for greater investment in public services.
France’s 10-year government bond yield reached 4.96% on Thursday, its highest level since July 2002. Higher yields increase the cost of borrowing and can make it more expensive for the government to manage its debt. The European Commission has urged France to pass a credible budget to restore confidence in financial markets.
The government now faces a difficult task: improving schools and responding to public demands while controlling debt. How it balances these priorities could affect investor confidence, political stability and France’s wider economic outlook.
