India Retail Inflation Rises to 5.54% in September, Driven by Higher Food Prices

Retail Inflation
Food inflation rose sharply to 7.74% in September from 5.97% in August.

India’s retail inflation rises to 5.54% in September 2026, crossing the 5% mark for the first time under the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) series.Β

The figure rose from 4.83% in August, marking the sixth consecutive monthly increase in headline inflation since March. Higher food prices, particularly onions and garlic, drove the increase in household expenses.

The latest reading puts inflation above the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) medium-term target of 4%, although it remains within the central bank’s tolerance range of 2% to 6%. The data, released on October 12, highlights growing price pressures as households face higher costs for essential goods and services.

Food inflation rose sharply to 7.74% in September from 5.97% in August, according to the Consumer Food Price Index. Onion prices recorded annual inflation of 108.09%, compared with 48.78% in the previous month. Garlic inflation increased to 54.62%, while lemon prices rose 36.41% year-on-year. However, potato and tomato prices declined by 11.50% and 8.62%, respectively.

Rural areas experienced stronger price pressures than urban centres. Rural retail inflation increased to 6.08% from 5.24% in August, crossing the RBI’s upper tolerance limit, while urban inflation rose to 4.88% from 4.31%. This widening gap points to a heavier inflation burden on rural households.

Inflation also remained elevated in several service categories. Personal care and miscellaneous goods and services recorded inflation of 13.75%, while restaurant and accommodation services saw prices rise 9.36%. Transport inflation stood at 5.01%, adding to the pressure on household budgets.

The September reading could complicate the RBI’s efforts to control inflation while supporting economic growth. The central bank has already raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5% and increased its FY27 inflation forecast to 5.2%.

Persistently high food prices may limit the scope for monetary easing and influence borrowing costs. Investors will watch upcoming inflation data, food supply conditions and the RBI’s December policy meeting for clues about the next phase of interest-rate decisions.
