Energy in Motion (EIM) has inaugurated an electric heavy commercial vehicle manufacturing complex in Talegaon, Pune, following an investment of Rs 500 crore in the facility.
The project marks the first phase of the company’s planned Rs 1,000 crore investment in Maharashtra and aims to strengthen India’s electric freight transportation ecosystem. The facility was inaugurated on October 14, 2026.
The complex brings together an electric truck assembly plant, a lithium-ion battery pack assembly unit and an independent battery testing laboratory. It has an initial annual capacity of 5,000 vehicles per shift, according to the company.
EIM plans to manufacture electric trucks, tractor-trailers and dumpers at the facility. The project is expected to create more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, along with opportunities in research and development, design and information technology.
Alongside manufacturing, EIM is developing a nationwide network of megawatt-scale charging and battery-swapping stations along major highways, ports and industrial centres.
The company says its battery-swapping technology can replace batteries in compatible vehicles in less than seven minutes. The planned stations will also provide fast charging for vehicles using the CCS-2 charging standard.
The network is intended to address one of the major challenges facing electric heavy vehicles: reducing downtime and ensuring reliable access to energy during long-distance freight operations.
EIM has partnerships with BAIC Foton Motor for electric commercial vehicles, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL) for battery technology and Shanghai Enneagon Energy Technology for robotic battery-swapping systems.
These partnerships are expected to support vehicle production, battery integration and charging infrastructure development.
The new complex strengthens India’s electric commercial vehicle manufacturing capacity. However, the success of EIM’s expansion will depend on customer adoption, charging-network rollout and the economics of operating electric freight fleets.
