France’s Bond Yields Hit 5% as Political Unrest and Debt Concerns Rattle Investors

The yield later eased to 4.97%, but its sharp rise this week reflects growing pressure on European bond markets.

France’s 10-year government bond yield touched 5% on October 21, 2026, reaching its highest level since 2002 as investors grew increasingly concerned about political instability and the country’s public finances.

The yield later eased to 4.97%, but its sharp rise this week reflects growing pressure on European bond markets.

French bond yields have climbed from around 3.2% in late February, as political tensions and unrest over the cost of living and education have added to investor concerns.

The country is also facing pressure from rising inflation linked to the Iran war, which has pushed borrowing costs higher across major economies. Investors are particularly cautious about countries with high debt levels and large budget deficits.

France’s borrowing costs have risen faster than Germany’s, widening the gap between their 10-year bond yields to nearly 1.6 percentage points. This is close to levels last seen during the eurozone debt crisis more than a decade ago.

France is not the only country facing rising borrowing costs. Italy’s 10-year bond yield climbed to 4.56%, while Belgium’s reached 4.41%.

Belgium is also struggling with difficult budget negotiations. Its public debt stands at around 108% of GDP, and disagreements within the governing coalition have stalled discussions over proposed spending cuts.

The wider sell-off has raised questions about whether financial stress could spread across European government bond markets.

Investors are awaiting Moody’s credit rating decision on France, due on Friday. The country currently holds an Aa3 rating with a negative outlook, leaving the possibility of a downgrade in focus.

A lower rating could further weaken investor confidence and increase government borrowing costs.

The widening gap between French and German bond yields highlights growing concerns about fiscal stability in the eurozone. The European Central Bank could face pressure to respond if market stress spreads significantly, although investors do not expect immediate intervention.

For now, France’s political outlook, budget negotiations and upcoming credit rating decision will remain key factors influencing European bond markets.
