IDL Explosives, an Apollo Micro Systems group company, commissioned a 9,000-tonne bulk explosives plant near Asansol for coal mines.
Apollo Micro Systems told exchanges on 22 October that the new Bolkunda Silo Unit has a capacity of 9,000 tonnes. It spreads across 8.4 acres.
Baddam Karunakar Reddy, founder and managing director of Apollo Micro Systems, inaugurated the plant the same day.
Senior IDL leaders joined him, and the group later planted trees at the site. The silos hold a base material called emulsion matrix.
On its own, it is not an explosive. It turns into one only at the point of use, close to the mine.
That means less finished explosive has to be transported, and the company said this makes the supply chain safer.
The plant sits in the Eastern Coal Belt and the Central Coal Belt. It will supply Eastern Coalfields, Central Coalfields and other customers in the region with site-mixed bulk explosives.
For IDL, it is one more site in a countrywide network of units that make and store bulk explosives.
The company said the unit also strengthens its ability to deliver long-term orders from Coal India subsidiaries, which it secured earlier this year.
Apollo described the plant as another step in the Apollo Group’s energetics growth plan, aimed at bringing IDL closer to its customers. IDL is the group’s energetics arm.
It makes packaged and bulk explosives for mining and infrastructure, and Apollo describes it as one of India’s oldest commercial explosives brands.
IDL also anchors the group’s plans in defence energetics. Apollo Micro Systems, based in Hyderabad, develops and makes defence electronics for land, air, sea and space use.
Its customers include the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the armed forces and defence PSUs.
