India now has more than 2.5 lakh startups recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), creating over 25.42 lakh direct jobs across the country.
The figures highlight the growing role of startups in employment generation, innovation and economic activity. The government shared the data as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s startup ecosystem.
The recognised startups operate across a wide range of industries, including technology, healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, education and financial services. Their growth has helped entrepreneurs develop new products, introduce digital services and address business challenges.
The startup ecosystem has also expanded beyond major metropolitan areas, with more businesses emerging from smaller cities and towns. This wider reach has opened opportunities for entrepreneurs who may previously have faced limited access to funding, networks and support.
The Startup India initiative, launched in 2016, aims to encourage entrepreneurship through policy support, easier compliance and access to funding opportunities. DPIIT recognition allows eligible startups to access certain government benefits, subject to applicable conditions.
Other measures, including incubation programmes, credit support and initiatives to improve access to investors, are designed to help early-stage businesses develop and expand their operations.
The creation of more than 25 lakh direct jobs shows how startups are contributing to India’s employment market. Beyond direct hiring, these businesses can also support indirect employment through suppliers, logistics providers, service partners and other connected industries.
However, the long-term impact will depend on how many startups can sustain operations, grow revenue and become profitable.
India’s expanding startup base offers opportunities for innovation and job creation. Continued access to capital, skilled workers, reliable infrastructure and supportive policies will be important in helping these businesses grow and contribute to the wider economy.
