Mojtaba Khamenei insists Tehran’s terms to end the war be met, affirming Iran will maintain its control over the vital Strait of Hormuz.
He made the remarks on 27 October at a meeting with Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, according to the Tasnim news agency.
The Leader said Iran should keep pushing for the terms its officials have laid out to end both the war and the ‘neither war nor peace’ limbo.
The Tasnim report does not spell out those terms. Earlier statements fill the gap.
In September, Rezaei said Tehran had passed its conditions to Washington through Qatar.
They were an end to the war on all fronts, the release of frozen funds and an end to the naval blockade. The strait is the sticking point.
Before the war, about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas shipments passed through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has since largely halted traffic there, and its Persian Gulf Strait Authority now handles passage requests.
On 27 October, the authority said ships of South Korea’s Sinokor will face ‘legal action’ from 1 November over alleged crossing violations. Qatar, which is mediating, took a different line.
Its foreign ministry urged Iran to stop threatening Gulf states and open the strait so talks can succeed. It also said a Qatari delegation had visited Tehran.
Washington has its own message. In the past week, US President Donald Trump said the war could end ‘very soon’ and that the US must make sure Tehran cannot rebuild nuclear weapons.
Energy sites remain exposed. Yemen’s Houthis claimed a missile attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery on 27 October, saying it caused ‘massive fires’.
Al Jazeera’s live blog carried the claim without confirming any damage.
India imports most of its crude oil, so the strait’s status feeds straight into the country’s fuel import bill and shipping costs.
No agreement has been announced. The next date on the calendar is 1 November, when Iran says its action against Sinokor vessels begins.
