Maharashtra clears ₹13,856 Cr Metro Line 12A, an 18.4 km elevated route linking Kalyan-Dombivli to Taloja in Navi Mumbai.
A state infrastructure committee gave the nod on Tuesday, 27 October. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired the meeting at Mantralaya and told officials to finish the job in three and a half years.
For daily commuters, the promise is simple. Officials say the metro could cut journey times by 40% to 50% compared with travelling by road.
They expect about 4.74 lakh passengers a day. The route runs from Manpada-Katai Naka to Taloja through Kalyan Phata.
All of it sits on pillars above the ground, with 12 stations along the way. Roads get attention too.
The plan includes two integrated flyovers, one 6.93 km long with four lanes and another 8.69 km long with six lanes. Passengers can switch to other lines.
Katai Naka will connect with Metro Line 12 and the bullet train link, a point between Katai Naka and Kalyan Phata will connect with Metro Line 14, and Amandoot will connect with Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1.
Feeder buses will serve every station. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will implement the project and act as the special planning authority.
The committee also agreed to hand over government land near the route to MMRDA, which can use it to develop the area and raise money for the project.
The state also expects less traffic on national highways and lower carbon dioxide emissions as more people choose public transport. The deadline carries weight.
Many MMRDA projects launched in 2018 are still unfinished, and at an earlier meeting Fadnavis asked the authority to treat 2027 as the ‘Year of Metro’.
Delivery now rests with MMRDA, which has three and a half years to finish the line.
