Government agencies are emerging as an important force behind artificial intelligence adoption in India, as public institutions look to use the technology to improve services and make administration more efficient. 

Sharryn Napier, GitHub’s Vice President for Asia Pacific, India and Japan, highlighted this growing interest in an interview.

She said government departments are showing strong interest in AI tools that can help deliver services faster, manage citizen complaints and improve public administration. While adoption across the public sector is still developing, GitHub already works with several government customers in India.

India is also working to strengthen its domestic AI capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign technology. Under the IndiaAI Mission, the government has deployed around 38,000 graphics processing units, or GPUs, to expand computing capacity for AI development.

Other initiatives include BharatGen AI, which focuses on multilingual AI models, and AIKosh, a platform that provides startups and researchers access to anonymised datasets.

However, building a strong AI ecosystem requires more than developing models. India also needs reliable data, advanced chips, computing infrastructure, skilled professionals, electricity and strong cybersecurity systems.

Napier said GitHub has recorded 30% year on year growth in its Indian developer community, which now stands at around 32 million. This makes India the platform’s second largest developer market after the United States.

She also highlighted Infosys as an early adopter of GitHub Copilot in 2023. AI tools are helping technology service providers complete projects faster, improve efficiency and deliver better results to clients.

Growing government support and a large developer base could strengthen India’s position in the global AI industry. The next challenge will be turning these initiatives into practical solutions that improve public services and support businesses.
