IMF Says Impact of El Niño on India Has Yet to Materialise

The IMF will continue monitoring these risks before making changes to its economic outlook.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the developing El Niño weather pattern could create challenges for India’s economy. However, the organisation says its full impact has not yet materialised.

The warning comes as India continues to show strong economic growth despite concerns about agricultural output and food inflation.

Speaking at a press conference on 29 October, IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack said El Niño could affect crop production, push food prices higher and reduce the purchasing power of households. The IMF will continue monitoring these risks before making changes to its economic outlook.

El Niño is a climate pattern that involves warming sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. It can influence rainfall patterns across the world and is often associated with weaker monsoon conditions in India.

If rainfall remains below normal, farmers could face lower crop yields, particularly in regions that depend heavily on monsoon rain. Reduced agricultural production could also increase food prices and put pressure on household budgets.

Despite these concerns, the IMF remains positive about India’s economic performance. Earlier in October, it raised its growth forecast for India to 7% for both FY27 and FY28.

The improved outlook reflects strong domestic demand and continued growth in the services sector. The IMF also described India as an important driver of global economic growth.

The IMF plans to reassess India’s growth projections in its January World Economic Outlook update. Any revision will depend on how El Niño develops and whether its effects become visible in agricultural production and food prices.

For now, India’s growth outlook remains strong, but weather conditions will be an important factor to watch in the coming months.
