Pension funds worldwide are facing growing financial pressure as people live longer and birth rates decline.
With more retirees drawing benefits and fewer workers contributing to pension schemes, fund managers are exploring riskier investments to generate enough returns to meet future payments.
According to a report, this demographic shift is forcing pension systems to rethink how they manage retirement savings. The 2026 Mercer CFA Institute Global Pension Index found that 43 of the 55 pension systems it assessed had fertility rates below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman.
Pension funds must balance the money they receive from workers and employers with the benefits they pay to retirees. When people live longer, retirement payments continue for more years, increasing the financial burden on pension providers.
At the same time, declining birth rates can reduce the number of future workers supporting these systems. This creates additional pressure, particularly for schemes that depend heavily on contributions from current employees.
To improve returns, some pension funds are increasing their investments in private credit, private equity and infrastructure. These assets can offer attractive long term returns, but they may also carry higher risks, limited liquidity and less transparent valuations than traditional investments.
The United States faces its own retirement funding challenges. The latest projections indicate that the Social Security retirement trust fund could exhaust its reserves in the fourth quarter of 2032. At that point, incoming revenue would cover only about 78 % of scheduled benefits.
Pension funds cannot solve demographic challenges through investment returns alone. Better financial planning, sustainable contribution levels, careful risk management and appropriate retirement policies will also matter.
For individuals, the situation highlights the importance of starting retirement savings early and building a diversified portfolio. Depending entirely on pension benefits may leave people financially vulnerable if retirement costs rise faster than available income.
The key challenge for pension funds is to generate sustainable returns without exposing retirement savings to excessive risk.
