AgustaWestland Scam Accused Christian Michel Extracted To India

Christian Michel, the British national who is prime accused in the AgustaWestland chopper scam was brought back to India from UAE on Tuesday night. Michel is alleged to bribed the officials, involved in the purchase of 12 AgustaWestland VVIP chopper for Rs 3,700 crores, for reducing the choppers’ maximum flying height to 4,500 metres, which made AgustaWestland eligible for the contract.

Christian Michel has been termed as the middleman in the AgustaWestland deal and accused of receiving about Euro 30 million (approximately Rs 225 crore) from AgustaWestland to influence the deal in its favour, according to the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

As per the media reports, he was brought at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi around 10:30 pm on Tuesday, from Dubai. Michel was arrested by the UAE authorities in February 2017, after an Interpol red corner notice (RCN) was notified against him in November 2015, when he ran away from the country fearing the probe.

Following the successful extradition, CBI spokesperson said to the media, “an open non-bailable arrest warrant dated 24.09.2015 was issued on September 24, 2015, by the CBI Special Judge at Patiala House Court in New Delhi,” after Michel escaped from the country.

The CBI then forwarded a request for extradition to the UAE authorities on March 19, 2017.

“On November 19 this year, the Court of Dubai upheld the lower court decision for the possibility of extraditing him to Indian Authorities,” he added. Michel will be produced before a CBI special court in New Delhi, today.
