Air India has entered the emerging electric aircraft space by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan-based SkyDrive and Suzuki Motor Corporation to study the use of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, or eVTOLs, for medical logistics in India.

The partnership could open a new use for electric aircraft in transporting urgent medical supplies. The feasibility study will focus on moving high-value and time-sensitive medical supplies, particularly in areas where road traffic can make last-mile deliveries slow. Electric aircraft could potentially help hospitals, laboratories and healthcare providers receive critical supplies faster.

The three companies bring different strengths to the project. SkyDrive will contribute its eVTOL technology, while Air India will bring its aviation and operational expertise. Suzuki, which has been exploring the Indian eVTOL market with SkyDrive, will provide knowledge of local business conditions and customer requirements.

The agreement does not represent an immediate commercial launch. Instead, the companies will first assess whether electric aircraft can be practically deployed for medical transportation in India. Areas such as operating conditions, routes, infrastructure and the broader business case will need to be evaluated before any rollout.

The move also fits into Air India’s wider focus on technology and operational innovation as it works to build a larger and more modern aviation network. The airline has already been pursuing partnerships across areas including aircraft maintenance and aviation services.

For SkyDrive and Suzuki, India represents a potentially important market for advanced air mobility. If the feasibility study proves successful, the partnership could help lay the groundwork for future eVTOL-based medical and logistics services, particularly in congested cities and locations where conventional ground transport remains challenging.
