Isomorphic Labs, a pharmaceutical company owned by Alphabet, is preparing to begin human trials for its cancer drug, developed using AlphaFold 3, an advanced AI tool created in collaboration with Google DeepMind.

Founded in 2021, Isomorphic Labs has used AlphaFold 3 to predict complex protein structures and design new oncology drugs. The company is now preparing to treat its first patients and is expanding its team ahead of the clinical trials.

These AI-designed cancer drugs aim to either kill or slow the growth of cancer cells, offering hope in the fight against a disease that saw nearly 20 million new cases and 9.7 million deaths in 2022, according to WHO data.

In 2023, Isomorphic Labs raised over $600 million in a funding round led by Thrive Capital. The funds are being used to advance its AI drug-design engine and push its drug candidates into human trials.

The company has also secured over $3 billion in partnerships with global pharmaceutical giants, including Novartis and Eli Lilly. Its mission is to combine AI and human expertise to create better, faster, and more affordable medicines.

Isomorphic Labs is part of a growing trend in biotech, where companies such as Anima Biotech, Iktos, and Novo Nordisk are also leveraging AI to speed up drug discovery. Novo Nordisk, for example, signed a $2.76 billion deal with Valo Health to explore the use of AI in its development pipeline.

According to GlobalData, over 3,000 drugs have been developed or repurposed using AI, though most are still in early stages. With its upcoming human trials, Isomorphic Labs may become a key player in advancing AI-driven drug discovery.
