Amazon is turning to artificial intelligence to make movies and TV shows faster and cheaper. Rising costs now force studios to rethink how content is produced. The company says AI will be used to streamline parts of the creative process, not replace the people behind it.
At Amazon MGM Studios, veteran executive Albert Cheng is leading a small team developing AI tools to reduce production time and costs. A closed beta programme will begin in March, with results expected by May.
The initiative, called AI Studio, operates like a startup under Jeff Bezosβs βtwo-pizza teamβ model. It is largely composed of engineers and scientists, supported by a smaller creative team.
Amazon says the tools will help fast-track specific stages of filmmaking. This will allow studios to take more creative risks at a time when ballooning budgets have limited the number of projects that can be greenlit. Cheng stressed that AI will accelerate creativity rather than replace it, even as Hollywood voices concerns about job losses.
The AI Studio is focused on bridging the gap between consumer AI tools and the precise control filmmakers need. This includes improving character consistency across scenes and integrating with industry-standard software. Amazon is relying on Amazon Web Services and plans to work with multiple AI model providers, with a strong emphasis on protecting intellectual property.
Amazon has already begun testing the approach with producers and creators. It points to its series House of David as an early example, where AI was used alongside live-action footage to create large-scale scenes at a lower cost.
