Amazon is preparing another major workforce reshuffle as it ramps up its artificial intelligence initiatives. The plans reportedly target up to 15% of its human resources (HR) division, according to Fortune. The cuts are expected to extend to other business units. However, the total number of affected employees and timing remain unclear.

The People eXperience and Technology (PXT) team, which manages HR, recruiting, and related technology functions, is expected to be among the most heavily impacted. Other parts of Amazon’s core consumer business may also see reductions.

This move follows smaller layoffs earlier this year in divisions such as Amazon Web Services, consumer devices, and Wondery. The company reflects ongoing cost-cutting efforts alongside massive investments in AI and cloud infrastructure. Notably, Amazon plans to spend approximately $100 billion this year to expand its AI and data center capabilities.

CEO Andy Jassy, who succeeded Jeff Bezos in 2021, has made cost efficiency a central focus of his leadership. Between late 2022 and 2023, Amazon eliminated more than 27,000 corporate jobs, marking the largest layoffs in its history. Jassy has also warned that AI-driven efficiency gains could lead to further reductions in corporate headcount. He emphasizes that employees who embrace AI initiatives would be better positioned for success.

Despite corporate cuts, Amazon is actively hiring for its warehouse and logistics operations. It has announced plans to onboard 250,000 seasonal workers in the US ahead of the holiday season. This highlights a strategic shift from office-based roles to operational and technology-driven investments.
