Amazon’s Anti-Counterfeit Drive Triggers $180 Million in Fines, Criminal Charges

Other parts of Amazon’s core consumer business may also see reductions.

Amazon’s fight against counterfeit goods has resulted in over $180 million in court-ordered fines and criminal charges against more than 65 individuals worldwide. This comes five years after the launch of its Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU) in 2020.

The CCU, comprising former prosecutors and investigators, has collaborated with law enforcement and brands across 12 countries—including India, China, the US, and the UK—to prevent the sale of counterfeit products. So far, it has filed over 200 civil lawsuits.

Amazon says its AI-powered systems block more than 99% of fake listings before brands even report them.

Some key actions include:

  • Tracing counterfeit goods from a US seller to Chinese manufacturers led to raids, the seizure of over 2,100 fake items, and a $1.1 million court ruling.
  • Working with Pandora to uncover a Europe-based fake jewellery ring, leading to jail time and fines in China.

Amazon has also partnered with over 50 government agencies, including EUROPOL and the US Homeland Security, to combat global counterfeiting. It also provides tools like Brand Registry and Transparency to help protect brands on its platform.
