US chipmaker AMD is in early discussions with the Indian government. They aim to co-develop indigenous graphics processing units (GPUs) and support India’s semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions.

The company may join India’s revamped design-linked incentive (DLI) scheme once it opens up to multinationals.

India plans to unveil its first homegrown GPU prototype by the end of 2025. It targets full commercial readiness by 2030.

AMD is also contributing to India’s Rs 10,000-crore AI Mission, which now supports over 34,000 GPUs in the country.

Its $ 400 million India investment remains on schedule. AMD’s Bengaluru R&D centre—the company’s largest—plays a key role in developing 2nm and 3nm chips.

AMD India, with 8,000 engineers, is actively involved across the company’s entire portfolio. This includes CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, SoCs, and software. Moreover, AMD supports Indian tech startups with selective funding and incubation.
