Andhra Pradesh added 3,865.63 MW of renewable energy capacity in 2025-26, nearly four times the 1,085.15 MW it added the year before.

The numbers come from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, tabled in the Lok Sabha on July 27 in response to a question from Tamil Nadu MP Dr M K Vishnu Prasad.

The jump looks even sharper against the state’s recent history. Andhra Pradesh added just 125.42 MW in 2021-22, 148.62 MW in 2022-23 and a mere 59.15 MW in 2023-24.

It crossed the 1 GW mark only in 2024-25, before this year’s sudden acceleration. Officials credit the turnaround to investor friendly policies, quicker project clearances and a wave of large scale investment.

Minister Nara Lokesh went further, blaming the previous government for cancelling power purchase agreements and stalling the sector for years.

He called the state’s revival “nothing short of remarkable” and said Andhra Pradesh is now among India’s fastest growing renewable energy destinations.

There’s a wrinkle worth flagging here. The state’s own nodal agency, NREDCAP, had recorded only about 321 MW commissioned as of end November 2025, far short of the nearly 3,900 MW the Centre now reports for the full year.

That would mean roughly 3,500 MW got added in just the final four months, or the two agencies are measuring different things. Neither the state nor the Centre has explained the gap so far.

The broader context matters too. The Centre also told Parliament that India has already crossed 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of its 2030 goal, and remains on track for 500 GW by 2030.

Andhra Pradesh has its own ambitious target of 72.6 GW in renewables by 2030, alongside a plan to draw Rs 10 lakh crore in clean energy investment by 2029.

Companies like ReNew and Greenko are already among the major developers building out capacity in the state.
