According to recent reports, Apple is currently working on a project called Project Apple Chips in Data Center (ACDC), which has the goal of developing a chip that can run artificial intelligence software in data centres. 

This chip is being designed to leverage Apple’s expertise in chip design for its server infrastructure. The company has emerged as a major chip designer in recent years. The company’s success can be attributed to their semiconductors, which are used in iPhones, iPads, and Macs. 

Their semiconductors have performed exceptionally well, and this has contributed to the company’s achievements.

Apple’s server chip will likely be focused on running AI models, also known as inference, rather than in training AI models, where Nvidia is dominant. The chip is intended to be used for accelerating machine learning tasks in data centres.

This could have a significant impact on the speed and efficiency of AI processing, which is an important consideration for many businesses and organisations.

Moreover, Apple has been working closely with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to design and initiate the production of such chips. It is uncertain when the new chip will be unveiled, if ever. The project has reportedly been in the works for several years.

The report also highlights that Apple CEO Tim Cook had recently signalled that the company plans to unveil a raft of features powered by AI technology in the coming months. 

Cook had told Reuters that they would continue to feel very bullish about their opportunity in generative AI and that they’re making significant investments.
