ATF rose Rs 16 to Rs 137/litre and commercial LPG climbed Rs 62.50 per cylinder, making jet fuel and cooking gas costlier starting October 1.

The new rates came into force on Thursday, according to state-owned oil marketing companies. They follow global benchmark prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate.

Airlines feel it first. ATF, short for aviation turbine fuel, now costs domestic carriers Rs 137 a litre, up from Rs 121.

Fuel is one of an airline’s biggest bills and can make up as much as 40% of its total expenses.

This is the third monthly rise in a row. September brought an increase of Rs 6.28 a litre, or 5.46%, and August added Rs 5.

Restaurants and hotels take the hit on the cooking side. In Delhi, a 19-kg commercial cylinder now costs Rs 2,810, compared with Rs 2,747.50 last month.

Other cities saw similar jumps. Mumbai moved from Rs 2,701 to Rs 2,764, and Chennai from Rs 2,916.50 to Rs 2,983.

Lucknow now pays Rs 2,932.50, while Leh pays Rs 3,450, up from Rs 3,385.50. Patna saw the steepest rise among the cities reported, up Rs 71.50 to Rs 3,100.50.

The timing matters. The festive season is close, and demand for LPG from hotels and eateries usually picks up around then. Cooking gas has had a bumpy year.

Commercial prices climbed from Rs 1,740.50 in February to a record Rs 3,113.50 in June, as global energy supplies faced disruption.

Two cuts followed, Rs 183.50 in July and Rs 192 in August. September then brought a small rise of Rs 9.50.

Households get a break. Domestic LPG stays at Rs 942 for a 14.2-kg cylinder. Petrol and diesel prices also hold steady. Both were last raised by around Rs 7.50 a litre in May.

Final prices can differ from state to state because of local taxes such as VAT. Oil companies revise both fuels on the first day of every month.
