Australia is set to roll out a first-of-its-kind “Solar Share” programme that will give households, even those without solar panels, at least 3 hours of free solar power every day starting in 2026.
The initiative, announced by Energy Minister Chris Bowen, will launch first in New South Wales, South Australia, and southeast Queensland. It will then expand nationwide. Households will receive free power during midday hours when solar generation is at its peak.
The goal is to encourage people to shift their electricity use to periods of abundant solar energy. This aims to reduce overall grid pressure and energy costs. “Everyone can benefit — whether you own, rent, or have solar panels or not,” Bowen said.
The announcement came as shares of major power suppliers AGL and Origin Energy fell 3%. Australia already has around four million homes with rooftop solar panels. These often produce excess power on sunny afternoons that drives prices negative.
To join the programme, customers must have smart meters and run energy-intensive tasks, such as charging electric vehicles or operating appliances, during the free solar window. The plan aligns with Australia’s target of achieving 82% renewable electricity and a 43% emissions cut by 2030.
