Barcelona saw its hottest June ever, with an average temperature of 26°C, breaking the previous 2003 record of 25.6°C, according to Spain’s weather agency.
On 30th June, the city also recorded a one-day high of 37.9°C as much of Spain battled its first major heatwave of the year.
Across Europe, temperatures soared, with forecasts of 40°C in Paris, health alerts in Belgium and the Netherlands, and France closing over 1,300 schools.
France issued red alerts for extreme heat and warned of wildfire risks due to dry soil and a lack of rainfall.
Italy reported 17 major cities under heatwave alerts, and a man in Bologna died while working in intense heat; torrential rains also hit northern parts of the country.
The Netherlands experienced a shift in major events due to the heat, while Portugal saw a June record high of 46.6°C in Mora, although conditions have begun to ease.
