Shares of Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) will be in focus on September 24 after the Ministry of Defence signed a Rs 810.79 crore contract with the defence PSU for 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force. 

The agreement was signed on September 23 under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.

The SAT-SAAW system is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb designed to engage targets from a long stand-off range. It can be deployed from multiple Indian Air Force platforms, including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30 MKI. 

The weapon has been designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with BDL responsible for manufacturing the system.

The contract includes 160 weapons along with related equipment. The system will have 60% indigenous content, while the programme also includes the indigenisation of key components such as the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier. This is aimed at increasing domestic manufacturing in critical defence technologies.

Deliveries under the latest contract are scheduled across financial years 2027-28 and 2028-29. The Ministry of Defence said the induction of the weapons is expected to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force and support India’s broader defence preparedness.

BDL has been receiving a series of defence orders as India increases procurement from domestic manufacturers. In June, the company secured contracts worth Rs 1,347.71 crore from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for Helina launchers and line-replaceable units, along with countermeasure dispensing system units.

The latest contract also adds to BDL’s existing business in guided missile systems and other defence equipment supplied to India’s armed forces. The company manufactures several indigenous weapon systems, including the Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon, Akash Weapon System, Astra and Helina.

BDL’s Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon has a reported range of up to 90-100 km, depending on release conditions, with accuracy of less than 7 metres using IN-GPS and less than 3 metres with its seeker.

Bharat Dynamics shares closed at Rs 1,161 on the NSE on September 23, down 0.60%.
