PM Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate Bhogapuram International Airport in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district on August 1.

Located in the state’s Vizianagaram district, the greenfield airport is designed to improve air connectivity for people across North Andhra Pradesh and support growth in tourism, trade, logistics and local industry.

Beyond passenger flights, the plan includes air cargo facilities, MRO services, a convention centre, hotels and business parks around the airport, aimed at turning it into a broader economic hub rather than just a transit point. Construction moved quickly.

The airport was built in about two and a half years, wrapping up nearly five months ahead of schedule, and it received its aerodrome licence earlier this month. It will also be fully Digi Yatra enabled, letting passengers use facial recognition for a paperless check in process.

The terminal itself is built around modern conveniences. Travellers can expect contact boarding bridges, self service baggage drop counters, and automated passenger processing, backed by smart surveillance and a dedicated operations control centre to keep things running smoothly.

In its first phase, the airport will handle 6 million passengers a year. That number is expected to grow over time, with plans to scale up to 12 million passengers in phase two and eventually 18 million in phase three, as demand from the region increases.

GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited is developing the project under a public private partnership, using a design, build, finance, operate and transfer model. The first phase carries a price tag of around ₹4,727 crore.

On the runway side, Bhogapuram will feature a 3,800 metre Code E runway capable of handling wide body aircraft like the Boeing 777, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A330 and A340, along with a 5,000 square metre cargo terminal for freight operations.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has compared the project’s potential impact to what Shamshabad Airport did for Hyderabad, calling it a key driver for the wider Visakhapatnam Economic Region.
