Authorities have launched a probe after fishermen reported unusual churning and bubbling of seawater off the Gujarat coast, making parts of the Arabian Sea appear as if it were “boiling.” The phenomenon was first spotted by fishermen operating near Palghar district and has since raised concerns among local officials and the fishing community.

According to officials, videos shared by fishermen show large patches of water continuously bubbling and swirling. This activity is considered highly unusual and potentially risky for vessels operating in the area. As a result, the visual appearance has prompted authorities to act swiftly.

Officials are examining several possible causes, including gas leaks from the seabed, underwater geological movements, or leakage from undersea pipelines. This is significant, given the region’s proximity to busy shipping routes and active fishing zones.

Vivekanand Kadam, head of the Palghar District Disaster Management Cell, said specialised marine and industrial agencies would be involved. They need to determine whether the incident is the result of natural processes or an artificial industrial issue.

As a precautionary step, fishermen and boat operators have been advised to exercise extreme caution while navigating near the affected waters. This should continue until the investigation is completed.

Officials also cited past incidents to underscore the seriousness of such events. In 2021, a subsea pipeline leak near Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula triggered a massive surface fire in the Gulf of Mexico. This event highlighted the potential risks posed by underwater leaks.
