Brazil and China are deepening diplomatic and trade ties, as Presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Xi Jinping held an hour-long call on 11th August, discussing BRICS cooperation, G20 priorities, and strategies to counter new US tariffs announced by Donald Trump.
The two leaders agreed on the importance of BRICS and the G20 in defending multilateralism. They committed to exploring new business opportunities between their economies. Lula had earlier signalled plans to rally BRICS nations to respond collectively to Trump’s tariff threats, after he labelled the group “anti-American.”
Xi described the BRICS as a key platform for building unity in the Global South. He said that China and Brazil should set an example of self-reliance. He also described their bilateral relations as “the best in history.” Xi expressed readiness to work with Brazil on global challenges, including the political resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
Trade remains central to their partnership. China is the world’s largest soybean importer and a top buyer of Brazilian produce. Recently, more Brazilian coffee producers entered the Chinese market after facing steep US tariffs. Last week, China also expressed support for Brazil in resisting “bullying behaviour” in the form of excessive tariffs, without directly naming the US.
