Brexit Deal Stalls In UK Parliament, No-Confidence Vote Tomorrow

The Brexit deal by UK Prime Minister Theresa May was rejected by the UK Parliament, witnessing the biggest defeat for any government in at least 100 years. The House of Commons voted down the deal by 432 votes versus 202 votes leaving the Brexit talks in shambles.

UK House of Commons tweeted, “GOVERNMENT DEFEAT: The House of Commons has rejected the Government’s #BrexitDeal in the #MeaningfulVote. The Commons voted 432 to 202 – a majority of 230. #BrexitVote”

Theresa May, after the humiliating defeat, is now facing a no-confidence vote in her government. The leader of the Labour Party of UK, Jeremy Corbyn, has put a no-confidence motion against May in order to oust her government.

UK House of Commons also tweeted, “@jeremycorbyn has put down a motion of no confidence in the Government. It will be debated and voted on tomorrow, Wednesday 16 January 2019. If it is successful, there will be 14 days for a new government to be formed, or a general election will be scheduled.”

If May loses the no-confidence motion, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, UK will move one step closer to its third general election within four years. The EU Council, on the other hand, has denied any other deal as the UK departure from EU, which is set to take place on March 29, comes close.

May after the Parliamentary vote, told the Commons: “It is clear that the House does not support this deal. But tonight’s vote tells us nothing about what it does support, nothing about how – or even if it intends to honour the decision the British people took in a referendum Parliament decided to hold.”
