The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared two major infrastructure projects. These aim to boost connectivity and development in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
The first is the doubling of the 177 km Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat railway line for Rs 3,169 crore. This will ease congestion, improve efficiency, and enhance service reliability for Indian Railways. The project, part of the PM-Gati Shakti plan, will benefit nearly 29 lakh people across 441 villages in five districts. These include three aspirational ones – Banka, Godda, and Dumka. It will also enhance access to pilgrimage sites like Deoghar and Tarapith. Furthermore, it will facilitate coal and cement transportation, add 15 MTPA freight capacity, save 5 crore litres of oil annually, and reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to planting one crore trees.
The second is a new 82.4 km, 4-lane Mokama–Munger greenfield road project under the Buxar–Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor. Approved for Rs 4,447 crore, it will connect key hubs including Mokama, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, and Munger. This will support industries like food processing, logistics, and ordnance manufacturing.
Designed for speeds of up to 100 km/h, it will reduce travel time to 1.5 hours. It will also create over 33 lakh person-days of jobs and spur economic growth in the region.
