Cabinet Clears Rs 3,626 Crore Expansion of Pune Metro Line 2

Metro
Phase-1B will expand the city's operational metro network to 34 km.

In a major move to boost public transport in Pune, the Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 3,626 crore expansion of Pune Metro Line 2. The decision, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was announced on 25th June. It aims to strengthen east-west connectivity across the city.

The extension will add 12.75 km of new track and 13 stations. It will link key areas like Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. This will ease congestion and reduce travel time for residents commuting between Pune’s core and its fast-growing suburbs.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that India now ranks among the top three countries in metro rail scale and network. Pune, the ninth-largest city in India, continues to experience a rising demand for efficient transit systems.

The expansion will be developed under:

  • Corridor 2A: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk
  • Corridor 2B: Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi

These routes will build on the current Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor from Phase 1, which is already operational as part of Pune Metro’s 33.3 km network. Another 33 km is also under construction across the city.

This metro expansion is expected to offer a cleaner, faster alternative to road travel. It will help Pune grow sustainably while supporting its population and economic activity.
