Modi said Indiaโ€™s R&D spending doubled and patent filings rose 17-fold.

The Union Cabinet, led by PM Narendra Modi, has approved an outlay of Rs 6,520 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY). This approval is for the 15th Finance Commission cycle (2021-22 to 2025-26).

This includes an additional Rs 1,920 crore. Rs 1,000 crore of this will be used to set up 50 multi-product food irradiation units and 100 NABL-accredited food testing labs. These units and labs will fall under the Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure (ICCVAI) and Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI) components.

The remaining Rs 920 crore will be used to fund other PMKSY projects. Both ICCVAI and FSQAI are demand-driven. Eligible entities are invited to submit proposals via Expressions of Interest (EOIs). These proposals will be reviewed in accordance with the scheme guidelines.

The 50 food irradiation units are expected to add 20โ€“30 lakh metric tonnes of preservation capacity annually. In contrast, the 100 private-sector food testing labs will enhance testing infrastructure and improve food safety compliance.

The expanded scheme aims to strengthen food safety, reduce waste, and enhance value addition in the food processing sector.
