CCI Grants Conditional Approval to Zee-Sony Merger

The Competition Commission of India approved the merger with some modifications.

On Tuesday, CCI (Competition Commission of India has granted conditional approval to the proposal for merger of Sony Pictures Network India and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. However, a formal order by the CCI is expected to be issued shortly.


As per the media reports, Competition Commission of India approved the merger with some modifications to the proposal submitted by Zee and Sony. Competition Commission of India has asked both the companies to ensure no misuse of market dominance. According to the reports, the regulator imposed limits to prevent Zee Sony from abusing its dominating market position.


It is to be noted that in December 2021, the companies signed definitive agreements to merge ZEEL with and into SPNI and combine their linear TV networks, digital assets, production operations and program libraries. The merged company is likely to retain Zee’s stock market listing in India.


Formed on 14 October 2003, the Competition Commission of India is the main national competition regulator in India. Headquartered in New Delhi, CCI is a statutory body within the ambit of Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

The body is responsible for enforcing the Competition Act, 2002, passed by parliament of India to promote competition in the market and prevent activities that have an adverse effect on competition in India.
