CCI Orders Probe Against Apple

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has called a probe against Apple for unfair business procedures with its App Store. In a 20-page order, the CCI said Apple’s App Store is the only channel for app developers to present their apps to iOS customers, pre-installed on every iPhone and iPad.

“Third-party apps are not permitted to be listed on Apple’s App Store as the developer guidelines, and agreement does not allow app developers to offer such services, these limitations forced by Apple foreclose the market for app stores for iOS for potential app distributors,” the order said.

This also results in the denial of accessing the market for potential app store developers in breach of competition norms. Such practices limit the technical development of the services related to the app store because of decreased pressure on Apple to constantly innovate and improve its app store, which is also a violation of competition rules, the order added.
