China has waived the 125% tariff on US ethane imports, which eases pressure on Chinese firms using US ethane for petrochemical production.
The waiver applies to a group of products, including ethane, which higher tariffs had previously targeted as part of the trade war with the US.
China’s decision aims to provide an outlet for US ethane, a byproduct of US shale gas production, and ease import costs for Chinese companies like Satellite Chemical and Sinopec.
China buys nearly half of US ethane exports, which set a record of 492,000 barrels per day in 2024, with exports expected to grow in the coming years.
Other products, including pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, were also granted tariff exemptions, reflecting China’s effort to mitigate trade war impacts.
No official announcement regarding the tariff waiver has been made, and China’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs could not be reached for comment.
