Coal Output Up 28% In April on Strong Demand from Power Sector

India’s coal production surged 28 per cent to 66.1 million tonnes in April as several parts of the country faced power shortages and strong demand from coal-fired power plants. In April 2021, total coal production was 51.6 tons. “In April 2022, India’s total coal production was 66.1 tonnes,” the coal ministry said.

Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries produced 53.4 metric tons of coal, while Singareni Colleries Company (SCCL) produced 5.3 metric tons last month, and captive mines produced 7.3 metric tons. According to the provisional data of the Ministry of Coal, the total procurement volume of the coal industry in April was 70.8 tons, and the procurement volume of the power industry was 61.7 tons.

Meanwhile, Coal India alone supplied 49.7 metric tons of coal to the power sector. CIL’s coal supply to the power sector rose 15.6 per cent year-on-year last month due to the high demand for dry fuel from power plants.
