Delhi’s first-ever artificial rain project to combat air pollution has been postponed to the end of August. This delay is due to unsuitable weather conditions, according to Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
The project, which involves cloud seeding, was originally planned between 4th and 11th July. However, it was delayed due to ongoing rains that could affect its effectiveness.
IIT Kanpur has submitted the flight plan to IMD Pune for coordination. Approvals are being sought from the DGCA for a backup window if weather conditions remain unfavourable.
This is the first such attempt by Delhi’s Environment Department under CM Rekha Gupta. They are using artificial rain as a solution for urban pollution.
The initiative will involve five test flights using Cessna aircraft to spray a special mixโincluding silver iodide and salts. This will occur over northwest and outer Delhi to induce rain.
Sirsa responded to criticism from AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj. He stated that the BJP-led state government took real action by funding IIT Kanpur, signing an MoU, and speeding up approvals within four months of taking office.
