Delhi is set to take a bold step against air pollution with its first-ever “historic” cloud seeding trial starting Tuesday, 7th October.
The initial trial will take place in northwest Delhi from 7th to 9th October. This follows an MoU signed last week between the Delhi government and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.
The government has obtained all necessary approvals to conduct up to five trials by November. The estimated cost is Rs 3.2 crore, as reported by PTI.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the trial’s findings will provide clarity on how to proceed further. She added, “The MoU paves the way for a two-month cloud seeding trial on suitable days in October and November. This will be done using aircraft. This initiative will be both historic and beneficial for Delhi.”
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa noted that plans for the next five trials will be shaped based on the results of this first trial. This aims at reducing smog caused by air pollution in the capital.
The operation will be led by the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Kanpur. It will be in coordination with experts from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD). They will use a Cessna 206-H aircraft (VT-IIT).
