As the Fadnavis-led Mahayuti government approaches its first anniversary on 5th December, the year has been defined by an aggressive infrastructure push. Efforts to reassure investors and constant behind-the-scenes management of a three-party coalition were also significant. The BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena came to power with 235 seats and a promise of fast-paced development. However, the early days were clouded by delays in government formation and speculation over leadership roles.
The administrationβs first major test came with the murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, which triggered political uproar. This event eventually led to the exit of NCP minister Dhananjay Munde. Despite controversies, the government has highlighted its progress on metro routes, coastal roads, the trans-harbour link, and the Vadhavan port. They are pitching Maharashtra as a top investment destination amid rising competition from other states.
Managing alliance dynamics has been a recurring challenge, with corruption allegations against some Shiv Sena leaders. Controversies also involved figures close to Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. Tensions surfaced when Shiv Sena ministers skipped a cabinet meeting following political friction in Kalyan-Dombivali. Socially, the administration walked a tightrope between Maratha and OBC groups after the Manoj Jarange-led agitation over Kunbi certificates.
As it steps into its second year, the government plans to accelerate big-ticket infra projects and expand rural outreach. They also aim to further improve the ease of doing business. The Opposition, meanwhile, is preparing for sharper scrutiny, signalling a politically charged year ahead for Maharashtra.
