Former DOGE Officials Launch AI Defense Startup Cathedral

Cathedral
The company has raised $160 million in a funding round led by venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz.

Former members of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has launched a new artificial intelligence-driven defense technology startup called Cathedral, securing a valuation of $1.4 billion shortly after its formation.

The company has raised $160 million in a funding round led by venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, highlighting strong investor interest in AI-powered national security solutions.

Cathedral aims to develop advanced cyber capabilities for the U.S. military, focusing on both offensive and defensive operations. The startup plans to pursue government contracts while using artificial intelligence to strengthen cybersecurity and improve digital defense against sophisticated threats.

As part of its long-term strategy, the company is also exploring the acquisition of, or partnership with, a data center provider to secure dedicated computing infrastructure for AI-powered cyber operations.

The founding team includes Gavin Kliger, Luke Farritor, Marko Elez, and Jack Stein, all of whom previously served in DOGE and have experience across government agencies and leading technology organizations.

Their backgrounds in public administration, national security, and technology have positioned Cathedral to compete in the rapidly expanding defense technology sector.

Cathedral’s emergence reflects growing investor confidence in startups building AI solutions for defense and cybersecurity.

Venture capital firms have increasingly backed companies that combine artificial intelligence with national security applications as governments seek more advanced cyber defense capabilities.

The funding also underscores the rising interest in founders with experience working on government technology initiatives, particularly those focused on modernizing public-sector operations.

While Cathedral’s government connections could support its efforts to secure defense contracts, the company may also face increased scrutiny as political priorities evolve. Even so, its successful fundraising and billion-dollar valuation signal strong market confidence in AI’s expanding role in military cybersecurity and digital defense.
