According to local media reports, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead by a bullet today while campaigning for parliamentary elections.

On an island with monotonous traffic in the western city of Nara, a man shot Abe in the back with a homemade gun.
Abe was rushed to the hospital immediately after the attack. Police have arrested a man suspected of attacking Abe. Police identified the suspect as Tetsuya Yamagami, a resident of Nara City.

Expressing grief over the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he had dedicated his life to making the world a better place, and National Mourning Day would be observed on July 9 as a symbol of India’s deep respect.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says he is “lost for words” after the assassination of former PM Shinzo Abe on Friday.

Nara Medical University Hospital said Abe died of blood loss despite receiving a massive blood transfusion.
Abe was pronounced dead on Friday afternoon, the hospital that treated him confirmed.

“Abe was taken to the hospital at 12:20 pm. He was in cardiac arrest when he arrived,” said Hidetada Fukushima, a professor of emergency medicine at Nara Medical University Hospital.

“There was a resuscitation. But unfortunately, he passed away at 5:03 pm,” he said.

The shooter told police he had no grudge against Abe’s political beliefs.
