Fortis Healthcare Limited’s Shalimar Bagh hospital faces government action after a Delhi inquiry found serious lapses in patient care on 25 June.
The complaint came from the family of a young man who had been stabbed. They told Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a Jan Sunwai, a public grievance session held by the CM’s office, that Fortis Hospital had demanded payment before agreeing to treat him.
The family alleged the delay in care led to his death. Gupta ordered an inquiry the same day.
A team led by the Central District Magistrate, with officials from the health department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Fire Service, inspected the hospital and reviewed CCTV footage from the emergency department.
What they found was difficult to ignore. The footage showed the youth walking into the emergency room on his own, which the team said indicated that timely treatment may well have saved his life.
The inspection did not stop there. Officials also found building bylaw violations, illegal construction, deficiencies in the fire safety system, misuse of the basement area and serious lapses in the standard procedures governing medical care.
A detailed inquiry report is being put together and formal action against the hospital is in motion.
Fortis responded by the evening. The hospital told PTI it is committed to patient safety and regulatory compliance, and will cooperate fully once the formal findings are shared with it.
