France is coordinating with its European partners on a possible response if the United States takes steps toward asserting control over Greenland. A French minister said this on Wednesday, as concerns grow in Europe over renewed signals from US President Donald Trump.

Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said France wants to act collectively with its allies. He will discuss the issue with his German and Polish counterparts. European leaders, along with Canada, have voiced support for Greenland. They stressed that the Arctic island belongs to its people and is not for sale.

Tensions have risen after Trump revived his long-standing interest in Greenland. He cited its strategic military importance and accused Denmark of failing to protect the territory. The White House has acknowledged that Washington is exploring various options, including a purchase. However, Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the idea.

Barrot said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had ruled out any military action. This eased fears that Washington could attempt to seize the island by force. However, reports of recent US actions elsewhere have kept European concerns alive.

Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory with a population of about 57,000, is strategically located between Europe and North America. It plays a key role in US missile defence. Denmark has also dismissed Trump’s claims that Russian and Chinese ships are actively operating near Greenland. They say available data do not support such assertions.
