Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd, a government-owned shipyard, announced on Wednesday, 11 June, that it has secured a contract to build two coastal research vessels (CRVs) for the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

Each CRV will measure 64 meters in length and 12 meters in width, with a deadweight of approximately 450 tonnes. Designed for 15-day missions, the vessels will reach top speeds of 10 knots and accommodate up to 35 personnel on board.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders stated that the vessels will support offshore geological mapping, mineral exploration (including dredging), ocean environment monitoring, and scientific research. The ships will feature advanced laboratories for onboard data processing and sample analysis.

The company added that it will equip the vessels with Dynamic Positioning – 1 systems, enabling them to maintain precise locations even in Sea State 3. Powered by diesel-electric propulsion systems, the vessels will use diesel generators to drive their thrusters and operate within India’s exclusive economic zone at ocean depths ranging from 5 to 1,000 meters.

The shipyard is also constructing an ocean research vessel (ORV) for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (Ministry of Earth Sciences) and an acoustic research vessel for DRDO’s Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory.

In addition, the shipyard is currently building 16 warships across four classes for the Indian Navy. It has emerged as the lowest bidder for the Navy’s Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) program and expects to receive a contract to construct five of these vessels. Furthermore, the company is building eight multipurpose cargo vessels for a German client.
