Google is making its biggest bet yet on India’s digital future with a $6 billion investment in Andhra Pradesh to build a massive 1-gigawatt data centre and the power infrastructure to support it. Set to rise in Visakhapatnam, this will be Google’s first such facility in India and the largest data centre in Asia by both capacity and investment size.
The project includes $2 billion dedicated to renewable energy to power the facility. This aligns with the company’s push for sustainable operations. It also marks part of Google’s broader expansion of its data centre footprint across Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Andhra Pradesh officials say the state has already secured data centre deals totalling 1.6 GW. The state plans to scale up to 6 GW in the next five years. Alongside this, work is underway to develop three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam. This will enhance global connectivity and support India’s growing digital economy.
Despite broader economic uncertainty, Alphabet has maintained its commitment to investing $75 billion globally this year to expand data centre capacity. With this move, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a key tech hub. It is driving the development of green energy and digital infrastructure in the region.
