Google is stepping up its AI game with a massive new deal β supplying Anthropic with up to 1 million of its specialised AI chips, known as tensor processing units (TPUs). Valued at tens of billions of dollars, the agreement not only gives Anthropic a major boost in computing power but also strengthens Googleβs role as both investor and infrastructure backbone in the race to build next-gen AI systems.
Set to roll out in 2026, the TPUs will add more than a gigawatt of capacity. This marks one of the largest AI hardware commitments ever.
The partnership allows Anthropic to scale faster and depend less on expensive GPUs. It taps into Googleβs powerful chip infrastructure to train and run its Claude AI models. These models are direct rivals to OpenAIβs GPT and Googleβs own Gemini systems.
Google has already poured about $3 billion into Anthropic. Meanwhile, Amazon has pledged up to $8 billion and provides its chips through AWS. As Anthropic continues to raise funds and expand partnerships, this deal underscores how the competition to secure computing power β the lifeblood of AI β is intensifying like never before.
